    FAQ ( Frequently Asked Questions)

    • Where are your eggs from?

Our eggs are laid by happy, healthy hens right here in our farm. We are proud to be a local producer, committed to providing fresh, high-quality eggs to our community.

    • What do your chickens eat?

We provide our chickens with a high-quality, nutritionally balanced feed from a reputable New Zealand supplier. Their diet is carefully formulated to ensure the hens are healthy and lay top-quality eggs.

    • How many eggs does a hen lay in a year?

On average, a healthy layer hen can lay over 300 eggs a year. It takes approximately 26 hours for a hen to produce one egg.

    • What's the difference between brown and white eggs?

There is no nutritional difference between a brown egg and a white egg. The color of the eggshell is determined by the breed of the hen. Hens with brown feathers tend to lay brown eggs, while those with white feathers lay white eggs.

    • Why do some eggs have a blood spot?

A blood spot is a rare occurrence caused by a ruptured blood vessel during the egg's formation. It's not a sign that the egg is spoiled or fertilised. Less than 1% of eggs have a blood spot, and our quality checks normally remove them. The egg is still perfectly safe to eat; you can simply remove the spot if you wish.

    • What kind of farming system do you use?

We use a farming system. Our methods are designed to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare and to produce the best eggs possible.

    • How do you ensure the welfare of your hens?

We adhere to the strict legal requirements of the New Zealand Animal Welfare Act and the Code of Welfare for Layer Hens. Our farm is regularly audited to ensure full compliance. Our hens are provided with a comfortable and stimulating environment.

    • Are your chickens given hormones or antibiotics?

No. In New Zealand, it is illegal to use hormones in chicken farming. We also do not use antibiotics in our feed. We focus on preventative measures to keep our flocks healthy, and if a hen does get sick, she is treated under veterinary guidance.

    • Is your farm audited?

Yes, all commercial egg producers in New Zealand are required to operate within strict legal requirements for food safety and suitability. Our farm and processing business are regularly audited by inspectors from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to ensure full compliance with a registered Risk Management Programme (RMP).

    • What regulations govern egg farming in New Zealand?

The New Zealand egg industry is governed by the Animal Welfare (Layer Hens) Code of Welfare 2012, which sets out the minimum standards for the care and management of layer hens. Food safety is also strictly regulated by the Animal Products Act 1999 and the Food Act 2014, with all farms required to have a registered Risk Management Programme.

    • Why is New Zealand free of major poultry diseases?

New Zealand has strict biosecurity regulations, which prevent the importation of raw chicken meat and most egg products. This helps protect our flocks from major poultry diseases that are common in other parts of the world, such as Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease.
